KP System

Krishnamurti Paddhati in one dialog — Placidus cusps with their sign, star, sub and sub-sub lords, four-level significators, ruling planets for this moment and the 1–249 horary chart.

3 min read Updated 14 October 2026 Extended & Pro

KP refines the nakshatra system by splitting every nakshatra into nine unequal subs in Vimshottari proportion. The sub lord of a cusp is the deciding factor in KP judgement. Open a profile and choose Vedic → KP System.

The KP System dialog in Birth chart mode: the subtitle KP ayanamsa · Placidus cusps, the Ruling Planets card with seven tiles, and the cusps table with sign, star, sub and sub-sub lords.

Fixed KP settings

KP has its own conventions, so the dialog always uses the Krishnamurti (KP) ayanamsa and Placidus cusps, whatever your saved Vedic settings are. Only your choice of Mean or True node carries over. The subtitle states the ayanamsa value in use.

Birth chart or horary

The mode list in the header has two choices:

  • Birth chart (default) — the profile's birth time and place.
  • Horary (1–249) — for a question asked now. Ask the querent for a number from 1 to 249 and type it in the number box. AstroWatch casts the chart for the present moment at the profile's current location, with the Ascendant placed exactly at the start of that number's sub (number 1 begins at 0° Aries, Ketu sub). The subtitle reads Horary #117 · date and time · city.

The Now button refreshes the moment: it recalculates the ruling planets and, in horary mode, the horary chart.

Horary mode — type the querent's number from 1 to 249.

Ruling planets

The first card, RULING PLANETS · NOW, shows seven tiles for this moment at the profile's current location: Day lord, Moon sign, Moon star, Moon sub, Lagna sign, Lagna star and Lagna sub. Below, the combined list of ruling planets with repeats removed. The day lord follows the Vedic weekday, which begins at sunrise.

Cusps

One row per cusp: the degree and sign, then Sign lord, Star lord, Sub lord (in bold — the one KP judges by) and Sub-sub lord.

Planets

The same four lords for each of the nine grahas, plus its degree and its Placidus house (the house whose cusp it has passed). Retrograde planets carry ᴿ.

House significators

For each house, the planets that signify it in KP's four levels, strongest first:

  1. In occupants' star — planets in the nakshatra of a planet occupying the house.
  2. Occupants — planets in the house.
  3. In lord's star — planets in the nakshatra of the house lord.
  4. Lord — the lord of the cusp's sign.

Rāhu and Ketu also act for the lord of the sign they sit in, and AstroWatch adds them wherever that lord appears.

The House Significators table with four level columns for houses 1 to 12, and the What each planet signifies table with A, B, C, D columns and a green Signifies column.

House significators and planet significations.

What each planet signifies

The last table turns it around: for each planet, the houses it signifies at levels A (houses occupied by its star lord), B (its own house), C (houses its star lord owns) and D (houses it owns), with the combined list in green under Signifies.

Good to know

  • The KP dialog is tables only; use the dashboard chart alongside it if you want a picture.
  • Horary is always cast for the present moment — it's designed for a question asked now.
  • KP's Placidus cusps match Swiss Ephemeris exactly.
