Kundli Matching compares two people's Moon positions through eight classical tests — the kootas — and scores their compatibility out of 36 points. It's the matching most families in North India ask for before a marriage, and AstroWatch shows not only the score but every reason behind it.
Kundli Matching — the score, the verdict and the eight kootas behind it.
Starting a match
Open the first person
Load the profile you want as one side of the match. It becomes the Groom side.
Start Kundli Matching
Choose Vedic → Kundli Matching, or — on the Vedic dashboard — click the Kundli pill in the top bar (it replaces the Synastry pill in Vedic mode).
Pick the partner
Your saved profiles list opens. Choose the second person; they become the Bride side and the match is calculated straight away.
If no profile is open you'll be asked to open one first, and choosing the same person twice prompts you to pick a second person. Both charts are cast in the sidereal zodiac with your saved ayanamsa.
In Vedic mode the top-bar pair pill reads Kundli and opens matching directly.
The header buttons
- ⇄ Swap — exchange Groom and Bride. Varna, Vashya, Tara and Gana are counted from one side to the other, so swapping can change the score; use it if you started from the bride's profile.
- Change partner — reopen the profile picker to match the same person with someone else. The open profile becomes the Groom again.
The profile-name line under the title always shows who is on which side, as Groom: name · Bride: name.
Reading the result
Person cards
Each side shows the name, birth date, time and place, and the line that drives the whole match: Moon: Taurus · Rohini, pada 2.
The score
A large 27.5 / 36 ("Gunas matched") with a verdict and a short explanation:
| Total | Verdict | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| 33 or more | Excellent match (green) | Very high compatibility across almost every koota. |
| 25 – 32.5 | Good match (green) | Strong compatibility; the marriage is well supported. |
| 18 – 24.5 | Average — acceptable (amber) | 18 or more points is the traditional minimum for marriage. |
| Below 18 | Not recommended (red) | Below the traditional minimum of 18 points. |
The eight kootas
The table lists each koota with its meaning, the value for each person and the points scored, coloured green (at least half the maximum), amber (less) or red (an uncancelled dosha).
| Koota | Max | What it shows | How it's scored |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Temperament and spiritual compatibility | Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Shudra from the Moon sign's element; 1 point if the groom's varna is equal to or higher than the bride's. |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence | The Moon sign's group (quadruped, human, water, wild, insect) compared through the classical table — 2, 1, ½ or 0. |
| Tara | 3 | Destiny and well-being of each other | Nakshatras counted from each partner to the other, in nines; Vipat, Pratyak and Naidhana are unfavourable. 1½ points for each favourable direction. |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility | The animal of each nakshatra (Horse, Elephant, Sheep, Serpent …); same animal 4, sworn enemies 0. |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship and mental wavelength | Natural friendship between the two Moon-sign lords — same lord or mutual friends 5, down to mutual enemies 0. |
| Gana | 6 | Nature and behaviour | Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa from the nakshatra; same gana 6, Manushya with Rakshasa 0. |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Love, family welfare and prosperity | 0 (Bhakoot dosha) when the Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart; otherwise 7. |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny | Adi, Madhya or Antya from the nakshatra; 0 (Nadi dosha) when both share the same nadi, otherwise 8. |
A cancelled dosha is shown in green, with the exception that cancels it.
Bhakoot and Nadi exceptions
Classical texts list situations in which these doshas don't apply. AstroWatch checks them and says which one applies:
- Bhakoot is cancelled when both Moon signs have the same lord, or when the two lords are natural friends of each other.
- Nadi is cancelled when the nakshatra is the same but in different signs; when the nakshatra is the same but the pada differs; or when the Moon sign is the same but the nakshatras differ. The same nakshatra and the same pada has no exception.
Manglik comparison
The Manglik (Mangal Dosha) card checks each person separately, using the same rules as the dashboard's Dosha card — Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna, Moon or Venus — with the six classical cancellations (Doshas & Sade Sati). Each side reads Not Manglik, Manglik (red) or Manglik — cancelled (green, with the rules that cancel it). A final line judges the couple:
- No Manglik dosha on either side.
- Both are Manglik — the dosha balances out; considered compatible.
- Only the groom is Manglik or Only the bride is Manglik — traditionally needs remedy or careful review. (red)
- Manglik dosha present but cancelled in the chart — no conflict.
Export PDF
Click Export PDF in the footer and choose where to save. The suggested file name is AstroWatch - Groom & Bride - Kundli Matching.pdf. The report is a single A4 page on cream paper — ideal to print or send to a family — with the two person boxes and their Manglik status, the score and verdict, the full koota table with a What it shows column, and the Manglik box. It is written in your interface language, so with Hindi selected the whole page is in Hindi. The footer note confirms Saved — file name.
The one-page matching report, ready to print.
Notes on method
- The method is North Indian Ashtakoota from the sidereal Moon, as stated in the dialog footer with your ayanamsa.
- Vashya and Gana tables vary slightly between published sources; AstroWatch follows the tables used by mainstream Indian software. If your tradition differs, the per-koota table shows exactly where.
- Sagittarius and Capricorn are split for Vashya: the first 15° of Sagittarius counts as human, the second as quadruped; the first 15° of Capricorn as quadruped, the second as water.
