Shadbala & Bhava Bala

How strong is each planet, really? Shadbala measures six kinds of strength after Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, compares the total with each planet's required minimum, and carries the result through to the twelve houses.

A planet's sign tells you its dignity; Shadbala tells you how much it can actually deliver. It adds up six independent kinds of strength, in units called virupas (60 virupas = 1 rupa), and compares the total with the minimum each planet needs to work well. Open a profile and choose Vedic → Shadbala & Bhava Bala.

The top of the Shadbala & Bhava Bala dialog: one row per graha with a strength bar and a tick at its required minimum, the value in rupas against the minimum, a percentage and a Strong, Adequate or Weak pill.

Every planet's strength against its required minimum.

Planetary strength

The first section answers the main question in one row per planet, Sun to Saturn:

  • A bar with a thin tick at the planet's required minimum (hover it for the exact figure).
  • The total against the minimum, e.g. 6.42 / 5.0 rupas.
  • A percentage — the total divided by the minimum. Hover it to see the planet's Rank 2 of 7 by strength ratio; ranking by ratio is fairer than raw rupas, because the minimums differ.
  • A verdict: Strong (120% or more), Adequate (100–120%) or Weak (below 100%).

The six components

The second table, SIX COMPONENTS · VIRUPAS, shows where each total comes from. Negative values — usually in Drik bala — are shown in red.

ComponentWhat it measures
SthanaPositional strength: exaltation, dignity across seven divisional charts, odd/even signs, angularity and decanate.
DigDirectional strength: the Sun and Mars are strongest at the MC, the Moon and Venus at the IC, Jupiter and Mercury at the Ascendant, Saturn at the Descendant.
KalaTemporal strength: day or night birth, the Moon's phase, the part of the day, the year, month, weekday and hour lords, and declination.
CheshtaMotional strength: retrograde and slow planets gain; for the Sun and Moon it comes from declination and phase.
NaisargikaNatural strength, fixed for each planet: Sun 60, Moon 51.4, Venus 42.9, Jupiter 34.3, Mercury 25.7, Mars 17.1, Saturn 8.6.
DrikAspectual strength: aspects received from benefics minus those from malefics, divided by four — the only component that can be negative.

Sthana and Kala in detail

For the professional, the third table breaks the two composite components into their parts: Uchcha, Sapta-varga, Ojha, Kendra and Drekkana (adding up to Sthana bala), then Nata, Paksha, Tribhaga, Year·Mon·Day·Hora (the four time-lord awards together) and Ayana (adding up to Kala bala).

Ishta and Kashta phala

Strength isn't the same as benevolence. Ishta phala is a planet's capacity to give good results, Kashta phala its capacity for difficult ones, both out of 60. They come from the planet's exaltation and motional strength (Ishta = √(Uchcha × Cheshta)). Each planet gets a green Ishta bar, a red Kashta bar, and a pill: Mostly good or Mostly hard.

Bhava Bala — the twelve houses

The last section rates every house in rupas, as a grid of twelve cards. Each shows the house, its sign and lord, a bar relative to the strongest house, and its three ingredients:

  • Lord — the Shadbala of the house lord.
  • Dig — the directional strength of the sign in that house (human, water, insect and quadruped signs each have their strongest angle).
  • Drishti — aspects on the middle of the house, benefics adding and malefics subtracting.

The three strongest houses are shown in green and the three weakest in red, so the chart's strong and weak areas of life stand out immediately.

Bhāva Table dashboard card

On the Vedic dashboard, the Bhāva Table card (choose it for LEFT · TOP in Customize Dashboard & Cards) brings house strength next to the chart. One row per house shows the sign, the lord and where it sits, the lord's dignity, the planets in the house, the house's SAV bindus (from Aṣṭakavarga) and its Bhāva Bala in rupas — the strongest marked ▲ in gold, the weakest ▼ in red. Click any row, or Shadbala & Bhāva Bala →, to open this dialog.

On the Transit tab the card keeps the natal houses but lists the transiting planets in each — a compact Gochar view.

Method

The footer states it: Sidereal (Lahiri), after Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. 60 virupas = 1 rupa. Yuddha (planetary war) bala is not applied. Houses are whole signs from the Lagna. Rāhu and Ketu have no Shadbala and are not listed.

The same Shadbala table, the Bhava Bala row and the Aṣṭakavarga grid appear on the last page of the Kundli PDF Booklet.
